Earlier in the evening we toured this building. Nothing in the sky predicted the storms furry. About 17:50. |

FORT WORTH - The central business district in downtown Fort Worth was closed Wednesday and officials were unsure when it will be reopened. "There is no way in the dark to tell what the situation is," Fort Worth Mayor Kenneth Barr said at a news conference late last night with other city officials. "Many downtown buildings have broken glass." The National Weather Service reported that the tornado touched down at 6:15 p.m. Shards of glass clung to window frames, crumpled blinds waved in the wind and some cars were crumpled on top of each other as rescue workers began to assess the damage this morning after a tornado carved a path through downtown Fort Worth. “It’s somewhat of a miracle that there aren’t more injuries than we’ve found out about so far,” Barr said. Among the buildings heavily damaged were the Bank One building, Tandy Center, a Cash America International building, Union Pacific Resources Building, other skyscrapers and a church. Fire Chief Larry McMillan said there were seven demolished buildings west of the downtown area where the search was focused. With the dawns’ first light residents and rescue workers in downtown are getting a true picture of the devastation from last night’s deadly storms. Two tornadoes tore through downtown, tearing walls from buildings, tossing cars like toys and shattering glass. The storm injured more than 100 people. The twisters shattered thousands of windows in dozens of office towers, sending glass and debris crashing into the streets. Texas Govenor George W. Bush has declared Tarrant County a disaster area. “Last night’s tornado damage was a tragic reminder of the fierce power of nature. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Our state disaster recovery teams are already working with local officials to assess the damage and provide relief." |
